GPU & PSU question: How come ASUS built this system???

Hello all,

My first post here! I did not know much about computer hardware until a couple days ago when I was shopping for a new desktop. I appreciate if you could answer my questions.

(1) I like this ASUS desktop with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 graphic card. The desktop maximum power supply is 300w (as stated in Staples' website) but according to GeForce.com, the graphic card requires a minimum of 400w. Will this be an issue? (How come ASUS built this?)

(2) GeForce.com states that this graphic card supports a max of 4 displays. Can I have quad displays with this ASUS desktop when the maximum power of the PSU is lower than the minimum power requirement of the graphic card? If not, what is the max # of displays I can have with this ASUS desktop?

I don't like some of the reviews on this one with the better card and what I found funny is why does the ones with the better card have the lesser cpu?? and the psu is claimed to be 300w max? is it that it cant support the better card and the better cup on the same board ?? wheres the one with all the top stuff on it ?? its like if you get this you loose that kinda thing

Thank you for your prompt reply!! Unlike you guys here, I do not know much about computer hardware and systems, so it will not be an easy solution for me at this stage. (I am learning though.)

I need a prebuilt quickly because both of my desktop and laptop which I use for work have problems.

well you can only do what you can though I would think being a asus it maybe a better deal over getting a hp or a dell type prebuilt or is it a hp rebranded as asus ?? I never seen anything on that when I looked as in weather the motherboard is the same kind as sold retail or the oem kind that you would get in most all prebuilts??? i'll look around once more on that.. but in the end you just got to do what you need to do ..

Hi, thanks again for writing. I agree -- very strange build with these two ASUS desktops -- I had all the questions you have too. :)

I ended up buying this a solution to my situation:

The processor is not as powerful but enough for work. I am comfortable that it comes with a better card and a psu of 500w.
(Come with win 7 which is a bonus to me!)

My first iBuyPower computer. I'll see. :)

I still think your money is better spent on your own custom build .. prebuilts just blow and there's always this to think about with them

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..


you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..
