Hi im new to windows 8.1 so i havent had much time to really get to know it yet. My setup is my computer hooked up to my tv via hdmi. Im trying to use these computer speakers i have as surround sound.

The problem is whenever i plug them in it takes away the tv's sound.

Oh and i cant set the speakers to just the rear or just the side it always makes me use the front as well.

Solution
If your TV has HDMI it most likely also comes with an optical out for receivers, like your surround set.

Plug in GFX HDMI to TV -> TV to Receiver via optical.

Option 2.
GFX HDMI to receiver -> receiver to TV via second HDMI for picture, main GFX HDMI to receiver for sound and picture(via second link).

Option 3. Which I use.
GFX HDMI to TV -> Realtek high definition audio via mainboard I/O hooked up to Logitech Z906(Optical solution also available).

Would you perhaps be able to elaborate on this I am not very technically savvy when it comes to audio in any way shape or form.

Which part would you like me to elaborate on? I'm not sure which part you're not quite savvy with. :D
