GTX 770 4gb vs R9 280x

I am building a new computer soon, and i am leaning towards buying a gigabyte gtx 770 4gb edition. Then I also saw the r9 280x which is cheaper and offering about the same performance, now i am wondering which card i should go for.

Try the one i7 suggested, 290 competes with GTX 780 which is a better card than 770. If you can get it, then 290 is one of the best cards you'll put your hands on :)

Or for that matter, if I was to choose from 280X and 770, then the 280X is my choice for more memory bandwidth, more shader units and better architecture.

I think I said the wrong term, I meant 'better memory bus' specifically, 256 bit GTX 770 vs 384 bit R9 280X.
I know GTX has Kepler and R9 has Tahiti architecture. I jumbled up the terms. Apologies for that.

Thats true, but the GTX 770 has faster vram, which closes the gap some. Its never a good idea to compare the paper specs between different architectures, as there can be many other factors. On paper the AMD FX 8350 looks great with high clock speed and 8 cores, in reality a quad core i7 beats it in pretty much everything, all while having a lower clock speed and half the cores.

Anyway, they seem to perform about the same, some games the 770 is faster, some games the 280x.

The only reason I was going for the Nvidia card was that i know AMD has had problems in the past whilst Nvidia is usually more complete. I'm not more towards either company just I know that AMD cards can sometimes act up, and that's from first hand experience.

On the other hand you are right about the r9 290 and it is a great card and for $10 more it is probably the better choice, but AMD kindof scares me with all the problems other people are having with their cards. (not trying to start a debate between AMD and Nvidia both companies make great items)

If you looked hard enough you could find horror stories on the internet for every tech product ever made. People with problems tend to be the ones who are most vocal, so it can be very easy to give in to confirmation bias. There are millions of people using AMD video cards just fine.

That being said, if you want to pay a bit more than you have to for a 770, that's your call. If you're gaming at 1080p, the best for your money right now is the 280X but what you do with that information is up to you. I don't believe you really need the 290 at 1080p, I just mentioned it because it's a spoiler to the 4 GB 770. If you're someone who actually needs 4 GB of VRAM, the R9 290 is just better across the board.
