i have a dell inspiron 560 with a 018D1Y (CPU 1)motherboard and i have 4 ram slots and im using a 4 gig ram stick in one slot NT4GC64B8HG0NF-DI why does it work and will that damage my motherboard im thinking if i have 4 slots for ram and it supports a total or 8g of ram meaning that each slot supports 2g right RAM

I don't know how you're system is running with 4GB in one memory slot, because according to the Dell specifications it only supports 1 and 2GB memory modules. So you have two choices and couple of possibilities. Either that motherboard has been replaced and is not the original or Dell is wrong. It's also possible the board has received a BIOS update that has increased the capacity it supports per slot. The A06 bios update targeted new Intel CPU's and that may also have changed the possible memory configurations but is by no means a sure thing. I'd contact Dell first and find out. Tell them it has a single 4GB stick installed and see if the new update changed the parameters. Aside from that, if it is recognized, all the reported specs...
