AS the question states
the following is my build
CPU: i5-4460
Mobo: AsRock H97 Fatality Performance
GPU:
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro (2x4GB DDR3 2133)
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB
SSD: Kingston SSDNow 120 GB
PSU: Thermaltake TPD 650 W
Optical: LG DCD RW 24x
Wifi Card: TP Link
Case: NZXT Phantom 240/H230
OS: Windows 8.1

Monitor: LG LED 22MP55HQ
Keyboard: Corsair K70

Should i fork out the extra 100 - 120$ for the r9 280x or should i pocket the savings and go for either a r9 280 or a 270x ?

Solution

You need to manually overclock any gpu, the 280x can play ultra smoothly, the 280, cannot

How much more of a performance difference is there between the two cards ? would the 280x blow the 280 out of the water.

Would it be worth it to spend the extra 30 - 50$ to get the 280x over the 280

I assume you'll be gaming, if so I'd definitely go for the r9 280x, since it gives you so much more performance, I think buying a r9 270x would be a bottleneck for the specs you got, it's a really nice build and spending just a lil' more for a r9 280x would totally be worth it if you'd ask me.

So i presume to just fork out a few extra bucks and add the R9 280x into the build, what about the difference between the 280x vs 280 ? you would need to manually overclock the 280x right ?
