This is nuts. My brand new laptop says the operating system is missing. I can't find my hard drive in the bios or repair from a disc.

Before this happened I had updated the drivers because I was getting stalls and when scrolling through webpages or watching videos in chrome.

It's a gigabyte u24f with 8gb ram, i7, 2gb vid card and win 7.

I'm going to go buy an msata ssd tomorrow but I want my data back or to copy the image across.

Anyone seen anything similar or know of anything I could try?

Nothing can be retrieved from the drive or copied from it if it can't be detected. Install a new drive and reinstall Windows from your factory recovery discs or system image which you should have made the on the day when the laptop was first set up.

Like thousands of others I suppose you didn't even bother to think about backing up your Windows and data. If so, you'll need to contact your laptop manufacturer and ask if they can send you a recovery disc set. They aren't free, but much cheaper than buying a Microsoft Windows DVD from a software vendor.
