We have a FreeNAS server with a P7P55D-E LX motherboard.

We've added a lot more disk space since building, and need to upgrade the RAM.

Specs say 16GB is the max ... (4x4GB) ... but is this true since now there are 8GB sticks? Can we put 4x8GB in there?

According to [http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=1083529] it is theoretically possible on a P55 board.

Didn't work ... we had 6GB in there, we tried 4x8GB -- not recognized.
We tried 2x8GB and FreeBSD gave:

Starting ntpd.
/etc/rc: WARNING: failed precmd routine for vmware_guestd
Starting smbd.
panic: vm_page_insert: page already inserted
cpuid = 2

Fatal trap 9: general protection fault while in kernel mode

nope i dont think 4x8gb will work.
but since you have purchased the ram, could you try an experiment and try set up a 16gb RamDisk with SuperSpeed RamDisk Plus (google/torrent it).
this would leave (if i a right)16gb ram (max allowed) and a 16gb uber fast hard drive.
if it fails apologies for wasting your time but atleast it wont have cost anything.
