I'm looking to get a computer before I go to Uni, and was wondering if the Sapphire R9 270X Toxic is a good card for somebody doing Video Game design. From what I've read, it seems pretty decent for games, but since I will be using it for other things as well, I was wondering what it's like as a general card, for things other than gaming.

The computer will be used primarily for 3D Modelling/Animation, Game Engine work, video editing (HD+SD videos), watching videos, as well as general use.

The rest of the specs are:

CPU - AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz (Not overclocked)

Motherboard - Gigabyte 270A-DS3P

RAM - 8GB Corsair Vengeance (2 x 4GB)

HDD - 2TB

PSU - Corsair 650W VS

OS - Windows 7 Professional

Solution
You can get a 280 for the same price as a 270x toxic. Get the 280. Easy call. the Toxic cards are overpriced and do not offer the gains they should for the money.

Sadly, my price window is pretty tight, and the cheapest R9 280X which I can see, after a quick look at least, is a little bit more than I really have to spend on a graphics card! Power consumption is another issue I would have to consider if I were to go for the R9 280X, as that card requires more power when under load. My main concern with the R9 270X Toxic, however, is the size! The card itself is nearly 31cm long, and the case I have in mind is 47.7cm long. With the HDD/Optical Drive bays, I'm not 100% sure that it would fit.
