Hello. Please forgive my ignorance for this matter or my question, but I'm in need of an aswer.

I have a connection of 5 Mbps but recently I have slow internet issues, specially with video like Youtube or Netflix. I used speedtest.com to check my download speed, which was about 1.5 to 2 Mbps, which is slow and not what I'm paying for. I called my IPS and they asked me to download any file and check the download speed, which turned just fine with 500 to 600 Kbps. So right now I'm very confused, because I can download software just fine, but videos and other media are just very difficult to watch, specially in 1080p.

I have the default router the IPS gave me, which I believe is kind of cheap, and also it has like 6 years or so. If I buy a new nice router, will my internet be more stable and always at 5 Mbps?

Thanks in advance.

Solution
It is hard to know if the bottleneck is the router, or Telmex. Being that the router sounds quite old, I would upgrade it, but there is no guarantee that the speeds will be all better.

I live in Mexico, IPS is called TELMEX and while I checked the connection using speedtest on my phone, I also checked in the same way through my desktop PC which is connected with ethernet.

normally, the router performance is enough if your router didn't run other particularly service, such as "VPN",i think the bottleneck is the speed between your isp and the video website, like youtube.etc.
