Hey,

I am planning to make a Home Server/NAS. I was wondering if I should purchase a cheap 10/100/1000 Ethernet card for my home server. Does it make a difference in terms of transfer speeds. or should I stick to Onboard?

I have the Dell Optiplex 745 FYI

Solution
Correct.

Just make sure you have a gigabit switch/router connecting the systems. The difference from 100megabit(100 / 8 = 12.5 megabyte/sec) -> 1000(1000 / 8 = 125 megabytes/sec) megabit is very noticeable for a NAS(even with lots of small file transfers.).

You may not get 125, but I am sure you can get into the 80-90+ range on large file transfers.

On a good day you can get very close to the max speed over gigabit.

Just checked. Its the Broadcom® 5754 Gigabit Ethernet LAN solution 10/100/1000 Ethernet with Remote Wake Up and PXE support

It does indeed have 10/100/1000. Does that mean an PCIe Card would not even help?
