Water cooling loop hit 70c

So I fear my pump may be Fing up.I have a full sized water quad rad with 4 fans on it. I turned the fans up to 100% when I noticed the increase in temp but does not seem to help.my pump res is the xcpc type. I know it would be better with a separate res pump but that is what I have right now. It us to run smooth. I am talking idling at 28C, Hell I never us to see it go over 40C even if I was using a program like "sculptris alpha 6" (hex core with hyperthreading , using all cores at 100% for sculptris and it would not go above 40c)
But now just idling it hits 60 or even 70c. But its not all the time. When I first turn the thing on it starts at 60c or even 70c. but after perhaps 10 or 20 mins of being on it will hit around 50c or so. I would not think air in the tube would make it go to 70c. I wonder if pump is acting bad or something as I noticed this when someone in the house started to play with the circuit breaker, turned pc on and off and on and off quickly 3 times. I wonder if the turning the comp off and on perhaps allowed some air into the loop. Although loop was shut so hard for air to get in. Now I have loop open and am telting case but not seeming to help if air is even the issue.I also wonder if the turning the circuit on and off and on and off perhaps damaged the pump in some way and made it work only at half or something as I recall smelling a sort of burnt plastic smell around the pump...

Could air in the tube make the temp go to 70c without some other big problem like weak pump?

Probably a failing pump, especially if it's been taxed to work harder than it was designed for.

- I doubt it is air in the lines since you haven't noticed a fluid leak, plus if the fluid could leak out it would be overheating far worse

- Liquid cooling is pretty basic. If the fans are working, the fluid is present, that only leaves the lack of fluid movement due to the pump.

Having said that, I'm no expert on liquid cooling so take with a grain of salt..

Yes you may be right. I kind of feared it was a broken pump or one not operating and full capacity. although I had the thing for like 3 years or so. Not sure if that is a good life for one. Funniest thing was I was playing warcraft 3, very very low end cpu game for my system and the damn thing in less I misread my temp guide moved up to 90C started beeping. I quickly turned it off and thought no games before this issue is fixed. I also then changed my settings to shut off at 70c to be safe

My super cool high end hex core computer has turned into a internet machine for now.

One other thing to check is how long has it been since your loops was cleaned last? If the pump is still working well, I'd run some distilled water with a couple capfuls of white vinegar through the system to flush it all out. Make sure the micro-fins on the CPU block are nice and clear so the fluid can do it's job. Do you not have a flow indicator anywhere in your system? It's always a good thing to have.

I really doubt it's a cleaning issue.
For one thing, that would be a really slow change in cooling efficiency. He also mentions a possible smell around the pump.

Regardless, I can't think of a reason other than a failing pump that isn't pushing the fluid quickly enough. He can tell if he has enough fluid, the fans are spinning, the loop can't be that dirty, which really only leaves a bad pump.

I would not think cleaning would make it this hot however hard to say. I should clean and just see how it runs. I am sort of scared to clean it right now as although it does run hot and I can't play games on it right now it at least runs. I can't afford to get a new pump right now will have to wait and can't be without a normal computer for that long of time. My fear is if I try to clean it and pump is too weak to push the water I will be stuck. It acts odd like it was hitting almost 80c for no reason without anything going on, now its idling around 57c,. I have seen it go down to 40c. All these temps where just browsing the web, with pandora in background. Perhaps cleaning is all I need but I fear its the pump, or something. I know the cpu is not acting up or anything because I watch its usage and its normally less than 1% being used sometimes it will go up to 10% being used but its a good CPU and dose not act up. However I should find a solution to this soon,. I am a bit scared of high temps. I like my computer to be below 40C most of the time, now its almost 2 times that.

Well, either repair your liquid cooler or drop that and go with a Noctua air cooler like the NH-U14S.

*I only go up to 60degC running Prime95 to stress all threads of my i7-3770K @4.2GHz. I have a Noctua NH-D14 with only a single fan running at 700RPM so I can't even hear it with my CPU fully stressed!! The reason it's at 700RPM is the fan control software so it would be even cooler if I manually set the fan to max speed but it's all automatic.

(I only hit about 70degC when I disabled all my CPU and case fans just for fun... max Temp for my CPU is just over 100degC so I could run without fans if I wanted. Even played a video game just fine. )

If I was buying today for your CPU I'd get the NH-U14S.
