Cloning multi-partition HDD to smaller SSD

My HDD in a Lenovo laptop is 500GB, partitioned as C: and E:, 125GB and 375GB, respectively. I want to transfer both C: and E: to the SSD, in new partitions of 100GB and 150GB, resp. I naively thought that Samsung DM would recognize and honor partitions defined on the SSD, but when I tried to clone the C: partition it looks like it's going to put it on the entire SSD, overwriting the predefined partitions. Unfortunately, my system requires both C: and E: partitions to operate. Is there any way to clone the C: to a smaller portion of the SSD using the Samsung software? I think I can fix this using another system, but for next time...

Hi

I would clean up your system,
empty the recycle bin
Run ccleaner
System cleanup etc

Then use a bootable disk containing a partition manager such as Gparted , to resize the partitions, one at a time starting with c:

If this works Then move the next partition and re size it

If this works there is a reasonable prospect of being able to clone from hard disk to SSD
You did not say how much free space on each partition

Don't forget the small hidden partitions possibly gpt, system recovery , boot etc
Which can be seen in Disk Management

Best of luck

Turned out to be easier than that. Samsung DM did in fact allocate the entire SSD to the new C: drive, which I was able to shrink to 100GB using Disk Manager (only ~50GB was allocated), then allocate the remainder to a new E: drive; now copying the old E: drive's content (~35GB) to the SSD's E:. Required a small bit of HDD juggling, using an ancient Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter to connect the un-installed drive -- best $20 I've ever spent. Once the E: drive is populated, I'll get to use the system more, but so far I don't see a world of performance difference. I did the SSD upgrade mostly for durability and battery life, though, so any performance improvement will be a bonus.

You bet. I got that a couple days ago in anticipation of doing this, but hadn't installed it yet. Thought I'd give Samsung a try, and should know in 4m30s if it did the job.

Update: Everything appears to be working. Most noticeable performance improvement is loading of software -- e.g., startup of Firefox, Word, etc.
