I have a Windows 8 (not updated to 8.1). I have Realtek speakers that were installed in the factory. They come up as in use with another application/program. There are no other programs/windows open for it to be in use... There's no sound.

I had this problem with my new DIY Windows 7 system until I uninstalled the Realtek audio and used the newer driver downloaded from the motherboard site. I would not expect this from a manufactured system but they should notify you on their site. My experience with Windows 8 was the reverse: it worked until upgrading to 8.1. After waiting a while an updated program seemed to kick it in.

So I went to my Support Assistant & it had an update for Intel(R) Media something and I updated it and switched the driver under the device manager and disabled the realtek.:) I hope that helps.

-Control Panel
-Hardware & Sound
-(Under Devices & Printers) Device Manager
-Go to Sound video & game controllers
:)

If you are interested there is are comments about the TrueAudio feature of some new Realtek audio devices at Techpowerup.com. That may or may not have been enabled, causing a problem. I imagine you will not notice the difference and am glad the solution you found worked.
