My computer got wet and I was told I need a new motherboard. It is an Acer aspire 7741G-3449 I have a 640Gb HHD in it with all my programs, files, etc. I bought an Acer aspire 7741Z-4433 that has a 340Gb HHD in it. I would like to put the 640Gb into my new computer and remove the 340Gb however I would like to keep all the programs, setup, files etc that are currently on the old laptop. Can I clone the 640Gb HHD and install it into the new computer. both run on Windows 7. I was hoping to be able to continue using the new computer without having to reinstall all the programs etc.

Is it a laptop, then proberbly not and you need an extra drive like.
If its a desktop you might be able to add the hhd to your new pc.

No, you cannot simply swap the drive in that fashion for two important reasons:

1. The hardware is undoubtedly different. Windows ties itself to the hardware at a very low level and it's highly unlikely that the system will boot. A repair installation is needed in this case.

2. The license is OEM, which permanently ties that copy of Windows to the first motherboard it was installed on. Microsoft is under no obligation to allow you to move it to another computer, unless it is an identical system that's replacing a failed system.

Thanks for the response. Can I then take the hard drive out of my dead laptop that ran on windows 7 and using a USB adapter . copy all my folders, pictures to my new computer that runs on windows 7.

what would I need to do to put the larger 640HHD into my new computer that came with a 320HHD. I can back up all the files on the larger HHD so would formating it be enough. ?
