Hello guys. Im getting a new cpu and mobo. Upgrading from i7 2600 and maximus iv gene-z TO i7 4790k and rog maximus vii hero.
Im wondering what cooler should i get? I'll push it to at least 4.4 ghz. I need your help, overclockers.
Btw im selling old cpu. How much is it worth? 200€ for CPU and MOBO? or is it too much?

Depending on your budget, the corsair H100i or H105 or H110 are the best. But if on a budget, the Cooler Master 212 Evo is good.

What about temps with each cooler? under 70?

All should stay below 50C at stock speeds, but if your overclocking then idk about the 212 evo, but the h100 series should keep it below 50C since they are liquid cooled.

Noctua dh 15 will be good and cheap

As far as you selling the CPU/MOBO you can probably get 250-270 for both. The CPU alone sells for 200-220. check similar ebay auctions..

That... im looking for some Noctua's. They are nice arent they? Is air cooling good for i7 4790k?

Noctuas are only 1 or 2 degrees begind the best water coolers at half the price so if you don't have much money, noctuas a better

Noctua NH-U12S. or NH-U14S.
I've tested the NH-U12S, the NH-D14, and the CM "EVO" cooler on an i7-3770K and i5-4670K (at 4.2GHz).

I've found the NH-U12S to be dead silent in idle and not very loud using Handbrake at 100% usage of the i5-4670K. The i7-4790K uses Hyperthreading but it's also been redesigned to run cooler so it should be similar the i5-4670K for cooling.

Make sure you have your Fan Control software setup for the motherboard. The Noctua NH-U12S should idle about 300RPM (couldn't hear from six inches away) whereas the "EVO" from CM was audible even in idle from several feet.

As per my above, I can give some details:
At ambient room temperature of 24degC (air conditioning) your CPU is likely to be in the 60's degC under full load.

Make sure you just choose "XMP" in the BIOS, then save those settings. Then, test with MEMTEST (DDR3 memory) and the Intel diagnostic utility, and Prime95 if you want for the CPU.

I believe "XMP" on the right motherboard is told to choose 4.4GHz for Turbo mode by default so the Intel Power Management should be intact. If it wasn't and you manually go above this the temperature jumps up quickly.

I'm saying this because others may say 70's or even 80's for temperature but this new CPU was redesigned to lessen the local overheating issue and I believe the XMP profile defaults to 4.4GHz. So again, this is all keeping things optimized for power management to keep it cool.

That cooler is okay, but it isnt the best, get the dh 15, itll let you cool it even more and the stock can handle temps as long as its not oced

Unless he wants to really push the limit in which case temperature really rises quickly, the Noctua NH-U12S is a great cooler for the i7-4790K at 4.4GHz (with again should be with power management intact). My estimate is that it should be in the 60's at 100% load depending on ambient room temperature, case cooling etc.

The max temperature is probably around 100degC so really we're just concentrating on the NOISE aspect at this point.

The Noctua NH-U14S would be slightly quieter under maximum load but going beyond these coolers is generally pointless.

People only go nocyua for the quality, if he doesn't want the best then he could just use the evo

Problem is, DH 15 costs 100€. I feel bit sorry to pay 100€ for AIR cooler. If i have to, i'd rather take h100i. I'll probably get this one: http://www.computeruniverse.net/en/products/90530580/no... for few months, till i decide its time to OC. Or should i pay extra 30€ and get h100i instantly ?

One of the best Air coolers on the market.

Noctua NH-U12S

Thanks. If im honest, i'd rather get H100 or H100i which one is better? H100 probably cus of 2x 140mm? And btw, my case is Thermaltake mk-1. Will it fit ok?

Why? They're more expensive and I think the h100i is better

Well guys, at first i just want to say, im really appreciate your help. I just dont know, wich answer should i pick as solution. Who needs ''solutions'' ?
I think i'll go with h110. Currently i have H60 and im really happy with Corsair H coolers, so i'll stay with them. Once again thank you guys. Blackbird nice profile.

If you use the "XMP" setting then your CPU should default to 4.4GHz or 4.5GHz. Someone told me 4.5GHz for his Asus board.

*So you really shouldn't go above this, especially since doing so removes a lot of the Intel Power Management so you get a huge jump in the temperature and need more cooling. The real-world benefit for processing is essentially zero for gaming and maybe 4% or so for converting video.

So if using the "XMP" setting the Noctua NH-U12S is quite sufficient to cool and will be far quieter in idle and probably quieter even under full load of the CPU than the H100 liquid cooler.

(Liquid cooling also reduces air flow over the CPU voltage regulators which normally have a CPU fan next to them, and done properly should have the fans as INTAKE thus changing your air flow design for the case. Add this to Pump noise and you need a good reason to justify a liquid cooler which I can't find.)

So again, my strong recommendations for CPU cooling is:

1) Use the "XMP" setting in the BIOS

2) Use the Noctua NH-U12S

3) Setup fan control software (run quiet in idle, and ramp up above 40degC or so)

Well, didnt expect such a usefull answer tho. Im really looking for Noctua now. Its a bit cheaper, but hydro is most nice-looking cooler. But what about Noctua NH-D14 or D15 ? Or shall i get my hands on your top suggested U12S ? Im ready to pay extra 20€ if there is any difference betwheen NH-Dxx and U12S.
