Linux Mint vs Ubuntu

Solution
Linux Mint and Ubuntu are both very good. In my opinion Linux does a great job of offering different UI experiences for Linux users. This is a pretty big deal look at how poorly windows 8 has been received because of an unpopular desktop UI experience it has given many users ... although some no doubt like this. With Linux you get to make a choice with regards to your desktop UI with windows you do not. In my opinion this is a big reason Windows 8 has not been widely adopted and MS is now fast tracking Win 9. Maybe MS should take a page out of the Linux cook book and offer different UI's so their users can have a choice ....

Anyways ....

When picking your Linux distro be mindfull of what desktop UI you are choosing:

KDE

If you want a user friendly PC, or a gaming rig, Get Windows 8.1. If not, and your are ready for a learning curve, Ubuntu is awesome. It's the most user friendly of the Linux OSs I've seen, and is great overall. That being said, it is a Linux OS so there is a massive learning curve if you only use Windows.

Most windows esque and many people moving from windows find this UI the easiest transition into the world of Linux. Both Linux Mint and Ubuntu (Kubuntu) have this UI as a choice. Be sure to download the iso image with the correct UI (KDE) ... although this can be changed after installation I prefer to just install KDE but you can switch from one UI to another at login.

Here's a link to other desktop UI's

There are others also ...

Elementary OS use the Pantheon desktop UI which is pretty cool also a good Distro for Linux newcomers

also ...

Deepin Linux is a distro from china which has a UI similar to Elementary OS and some would say that it's what Win 8 could have been. Does take some time to update this distro as the servers are in china as i found out.

You definately can't go wrong with either Mint of Ubuntu.

Do spend some time looking at the different options for UI and if you have a computer now you could always install virtualbox and take any Linux distro you want for a test drive to see what you are most comfortable with.

Good Luck

As long as you never get more than ankle deep in Linux you'll find that Linux Mint is pretty easy to work with even if you have a Windows-only background. Just remember that beneath the veneer it is still a completely different operating system and should be treated as such.

I found that out the first time I used Ubuntu. It's great if you just do simple stuff, but the moment you dive into say, installing a windows application, it gets much harder.

To be fair, you'll find it a lot harder installing a Linux application on Windows.
