One core always runs much hotter than others?

Hi! I had a quick question.

I have a new CPU (i7 4790k). When in use, cores will run at around 32 degrees C. Core 0, however, will always run at around 40-41 degrees when other cores are around 32. It continues to be higher in higher temp levels, but the margin can become one or two degrees less.

Is this normal?

Solution

Hi,

Some variance in core temperature is expected as a result of manufacturing reasons. A 5 degree spread across the CPU under highly concurrent synthetic load conditions is perfectly normal. A much wider spread across the CPU under highly sequential synthetic load conditions is also normal.

Under low-load conditions the operating system may place some of the cores into low power states. Some cores may be put into a parked state which allows them to be nearly shut off and draw almost no power at all. Heat will radiate from the active core(s) though, and one core must always be active in order to handle interrupts and OS housekeeping.
