ok so i currently use windows vista 32bit, however i recently upgraded my i3 and motherboard to a amd fx 8350 and asus M5 A97 R2.0.

so i felt i needed to update my OS and bought a copy of windows 8.1, i inserted the disc and decided i wanted to start fresh as i had nothing important on my pc, however it says my hard drive is formatted wrong and wont install so i thought i would instead try and just upgrade however i cant run the install program from the desktop because it is a 64bit program and i get a win32 compatibility message. please help thanks.

Put the Disc in the drive, reboot the computer and enter the BIOS (usually by hitting the "Delete" or "F1" key). Set the boot order for the DVD drive first and exit and save your changes. When the message appears to press any key to boot from disc, hit a key and begin the install.

already did this as this was when it told me it couldn't install to my hardrive.
thanks anyway

At what point of the install? When it asks you to choose a drive, you should be able to pick your current drive and then have the option to format it. This will completely wipe all information off of the drive and format it for the version of Windows you are looking to install.

Here is how:
