Previous post: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2258151/graphics-card-school-computer-budget-updated.html

Current incomplete build: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/2fF4ZL

Most graphics-intensive use of the computer will be light gaming (medium setting on modern titles) and some CAD (but can't afford a workstation card). Both will be done on a 2560x1440 monitor. Would like computer to work for three years with no (or very few) further upgrades.

Budget is around $400-450 Canadian, but very flexible. Preferred retailer is Memory Express. No brand loyalties. Red/black colour scheme a (very minor) plus.

Reasoning/justification for your picks will be appreciated.

Need to complete the build by the end of August.

Thank you in advance.

My monitor only has DVI-DL-D cable, but this card only has DVI-DL-I port. Does it fit? I can always dig around for my old HDMI cable, but I'd rather avoid the hassle.

It just sends an analogue signal so you can convert to VGA from the card. It's all the same DVI these days. You can go from any monitor to any videocard DVI, if you have the right cable.
It's backwards compatible.
