Dell laptop won't turn on without external monitor.

Dell Insp 1750 laptop won't turn on without external monitor attached.

So, it worked fine earlier today. Then, nothing. If I tried to turn it on, the power light would turn on, the screen would do an initial power on, the fans would run, and the HD would spin, but then the screen would power off. The fans would still run, but if I pushed the power button it would power off immediately.

So, I thought maybe it's the battery. I pulled the battery and plugged it in and same thing.

Then, I thought, maybe it is a stick of ram. Pulled one - same thing, pulled the other - same thing again.

Next I tried an external monitor. The computer will start with the external - the laptop screen will even turn on, but on the laptop screen there is two inches of black and then the desktop starts. I cannot see the bottom menu on the laptop screen. The laptop reads the desktop resolution as if it should be giant (meaning what is visible on my laptop is only a quarter of what my laptop thinks should fit on the screen).

If the external is not plugged into the laptop, then the laptop screen never turns on.

Graphics problem? Screen problem?

Help please.
