Which LGA 2011 x79 motherboard to use (ATX or smaller form) with i7 4930K CPU?
--------------------------------------
I am doing my first PC build to be used to edit photos and videos with Photoshop. I am capable of reading instructions and using "Youtube" videos, so I decided to attempt this myself - but I'm not a techie by any means. All of my research has convinced me to use the i7 4930K cpu. I am using a Rosewill R5 mid tower, ATX form case & trying to keep my build under $2k which leaves me with about $400 to use for my motherboard.

I have purchased several Asus products over the years, my most recent being a laptop. And I have recommended the brand to several.

This said, I was planning on ordering either the ASRock x79 extreme9 or the Asus Sabertooth x79 Mobo for my build, until I started reading reviews from various websites. My biggest fear is both the BIOS setup and POST issues that seem to be an Asus / i7 4930k issue.

So I decided to research other Asus X79 boards as well as brands from MSI, Gigabyte and Intel. It seems that everyone except MSI has a lot of BIOs and DOA issues. Unfortunately, the MSI board does not have any eSata ports and for what I need to install, no slots left to plug an internal card into.

Additionally, I have noticed that many of the X79 boards are "out of stock" and not being reordered by suppliers. What is up with this? Is everyone giving up on the LGA 2011 already?

As I stated, I will be using i7 4930K with an Asus GTX660-DC20-2GD5 video card for heavy photo editing and some video editing. I don't plan on using either the Overclocking or the SLI functions, but like that they are available. I plan to start with 16G of RAM in a 4X4 configuration. Need an eSata port. Which of the many X79 boards (and memory brand) would you order? My absolute price limit is $450....that is unless there is something out there that has a much better success rate that would be worth paying for....

Thank you - JP

First of all, don't buy an MSI board. As often stated by a senior member of Tom's here, they have quality control issues. As stated by me, their boards are crap.

Secondly, most of those threads you read were probably from when the spec was initially released. Pretty much any board you buy now should have a recent enough BIOS version for those issues to have been resolved. I haven't heard anybody having issues with those board and cpu combinations.

Newegg has plenty of 2011 boards in stock. I would recommend any of these:

Thank you for the response darkbreeze. I found another 'techie' site today that had comments similar to yours about MSI boards. So nix that! Further research has also nixed the Asus Rampage. I am not willing to add an additional $200 to the cost for a board that judging from reviews, has the same issues that the $250 - $300 boards do.

The other two models, Sabertooth & Rock e9 are the two that I have been oscillating between. I'm just hoping the person that pulls my order at the warehouse grabs a box with a flawless board....

Any thoughts on which brand of memory to use?

Myself, I'd go with the ASUS board. I've just read a lot more happy reviews with their products vs ASRock and in my own experiences, using both brands, I've had less troubles with ASUS. Everybody has their customer support overseas these days so you can't use that as a weight or measure.

As for the RAM, it's all the same these days so long as you use a trusted brand like Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, Mushkin and G.Skill. For your purposes I'd recommend either of these for the Sabertooth board if you want 16gb which I recommend if you're doing a lot of graphics and video editing:
