Old modular vs new PSU

Hi!
I have built a render node with Asus Z97-a and 4770k. It was a budget build so I bought a Chieftec APS-550SB PSU.

Now I have taken a Cooler Master 620M from a PC that I built in 2008, and was thinking of using in the new PC, and removing the new chieftec. I prefer the old one because of the black casing and modular cables ( I only need 24 pin, 8 pin and sata in the render node).

Are there any drawbacks of using an older psu with Haswell? Is the new Chieftec better than the old CM? Does a PSU degrade over time?

Hi - Yes, PSU's degrade over time, but not likely to cause a problem unto...

those PSU's are of upper level quality. Of the two, you are prob better off with the RS-620
as it has more +12v amps avail (you didn't list your GPU, but I assume either card will run it).

The drawback to using a non Haswell ready PSU is the annoyance that can occur when the
PC awakens from a sleep state, easily rectified by disabling the sleep state function in BIOS.

Neither of them are particularly great to be honest. If they can power what you want, then it wont matter much.

The Haswell compatibility isn't anything to panic about. It just relates to the low power consumption of the CPU when your PC is idle, some power supplies cant handle the low power draw. However this has been taken into consideration, that most people don't have a Haswell ready PSU, so most motherboards now have this Haswell C6/C7 power saving setting disabled by default. Or If not you can disable it in BIOS yourself (advanced settings, power).

PSU's do degrade over time, if used regularly.

Thanks everyone, the pc is only used for rendering and watching movies sometimes, so it never goes to standby, only shutdown.
As I am hoping to expand my render farm, I have to save on everything, even with these components I spent around 1000 euros. I am using the onboard graphics.
