Thanks to a virus I needed to restore my laptop to an out-of-box state. However, upon starting the restoring my computer froze and now upon reboot it says " Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key."

There appears no way around it and I can't afford a new one.

Any number of Linux operating systems will let you make good use of your laptop. You'll soon get used to it and it will do anything Windows can and usually better. Download a version and burn it to a CD which will run in RAM so you don't use your hard disk at all. See how you get on with it. Here's one of hundreds http://www.pclinuxos.com

The message is a error message when the BIOS can't load any info to boot into Windows, i.e. there is no install of windows on the drive. I would recommend a clean install, esp. after removing a virus! Windows 7 or Win 8.1 are good choices and also consider upgrading your antivirus!!!
