I am currently running a Gigabyte GTX 680 2GB SLI setup on an I5 2500k (O/C'd to 4.3 GHz) with 8GB RAM.
So, I've been noticing that some of my games (World of Tanks, War Thunder Ground Forces) have been chugging with any AA enabled and at full resolution (5890x1080 resolution on 3 x Acer H236HL 23" monitors). With World of Tanks, I'm consistently under 30fps (between 17 and 27), and with War Thunder I'm at or around 30 (hovering around 27-35).
I know the extra 2GB of VRAM will make a difference with the AA, and it would appear as though the increase in fps (probably around 20-30%?) might justify an upgrade.
I can purchase two R9 290's for $275 each, and, assuming I can get about $200 per GTX 680, my net upgrade cost will be about $150.
$150 for a 25% boost in performance is pretty reasonable for me, but the question I have is whether there are any issues with 290 cards (especially in Crossfire) that I should be aware of.
I've searched the forums and know they tend to run hotter, and some of the reference cards have a 'leaking' (whatever that means) problem from the fan area. Otherwise though, they seem like a great bang for the buck.
Does anyone have their two cents to throw in here? Are my performance projections somewhat off the mark/unrealistic/completely out to lunch? Any comments on the R9 290 cards in general?
Thanks!
