Here's a copy and paste job of a post I made in a thread that is similar to your thread... The person was looking to trade his somewhat dated mid range PC for a PS4.

If there are games that you want to play on the PS4 and you are not opposed to playing games on a console, then I would say it is a fair trade.

I do not play console games, but I would say that the biggest benefit of using the PS4 (or XBox One) to play games is that any game designed for that console would be able to be played without any issues. Assuming the PS4 survives into 2020, any PS4 game released during that year will be capable of running on the PS4 and your experience will be the same as all other PS4...

We can't build a pc that is equal in power to the ps4 currently. So far it's solely based on your platform preferences and the exclusives you want to play. I'd still say pc due to the PSN system and how it operates. Not a huge amount of exclusives on ps4 anyway (sadly bloodbourne is and I would love to play it but I can't really afford to support two platforms right now)

PS4: Exclusive Indie Titles, Has Less Games, Does a few other tasks, Locked to playstation software, More Expensive games Usually less expensive upfront

A PS4 purchased in 2020 (unless the PS5 comes before) will have the same CPU and GPU as a PS4 you purchase today.

On the other hand, because PC hardware advances on roughly a yearly basis new games will continuously push the performance envelope. While it is possible to play a 2020 PC game on your current PC you will have to settle for low or at best medium graphic settings. Even then you can still have frame drops from time to time due to the fact that PC (especially AAA titles) are always pushing for better looking graphics which generally needs ever more powerful GPUs and a CPU that will not bottleneck the GPU.

In short, purchasing a console is an economical way to play games for the long haul. As long as it does and the controller do not break, you only need to spend money on purchasing the game itself. The downside is that because the hardware does not change,graphic quality compared to PC games will decline over time.
