I need help fast, so please help me!

For the last 8 months since I built my computer, I have been using wireless internet on my computer, and I have been getting on fine. Now I have to move my computer elsewhere in my house, but I needed a wireless extender, so I got myself a 'TP-Link AV200 Powerline Adapter with AC Pass Through Starter Kit'. It works by plugging in one adapter near the router, plugging and ethernet cable into the router and the adapter, then placing the other adapter near your computer, and plugging the ethernet cable into your computer and the adapter. Then the adapters connect wirelessly, and provides you with an internet connection. The problem is, however, when I tried to plug the ethernet cable into my computer, it did not fit. There was some sort of tab from my I/O plate preventing the small notch at the top of the connector from insterting into the port. I don't want to try to force the cable in and end up breaking it, but I need to be able to plug it in.

I hope that someone can help. Thanks!

Hi
You probably didn't get the IO plate on right and one of the tabs that should be above the ethernet socket is instead in front of it,you could try and bend it out of the way or cut it off with some cable snips,if that fails you will need to remove the motherboard to reseat the plate.

That tab should rest on top of the connector block inside the computer as it ensures proper grounding. It sounds like you didn't quite get the angle right when you installed the motherboard and it snagged and was pushed flat. Thus fouling your ethernet socket.

I might suggest that you really only have a couple of choices:
1. Bend it till it staps off.
2. Remove your motherboard and refit it such that, that the tab rests on top of the ethernet connect block on the motherboard.

I guess bending it and snapping it off would be the better option, as I don't want to have to refit my motherboard - but what could I bend it with? The tab is partly inside the port.

Ok.

The best solution is to refit your motherboard correctly with that tab on top of the ethernet port.

Alternatively for quick fix you can snap it off. The metal is fairly weak, you may be able to do this with your fingers. If not, pliers may help.

Are you definitely sure that it is OK to do this? Because if so, I will do it, because I don't think I can refit my motherboard without breaking something. I just want to know that this is perfectly fine and won't break any components or stop anything from working. Also, would breaking it off stop me from being able to get my motherboard sent off and fixed in case it breaks in the future? Also, would a USB ethernet adapter affect any speed?
