Solution

Hi,

I have the dell XPS8500 from 2.5 years ago, and had upgraded 2 yrs back to a GTX680 standard cooler and upgraded the PSU to a seasonic x660. Still going strong and no problem running any new game today (at 1080p).
Two points:
1. most good high output PSU will be longer than the standard Dell XPS PSU, so I had to squeezeeee quite a abit of cabling and did a little bit of finger gymnastics when replacing the PSU.
2. The standard cooler GTX 680 just about fit the xps8500 chassis. I am not sure about standard 780 cooler as I have only my 780 Twin Frozr and it will not fit comfortably. (If I mods the chassis a bit maybe it will fir...

Well, I'm guessing you would like to game (not stated). If you want to go with GTX 780 my guess (you did not say) is you will need to upgrade your power supply. Nvidia recs 600 watts. Please be advised: Dell cases configuration may not (probably won't) easily allow a standard PSU. It will fit in the case, the problem lies with the power cord placement. Can be solved with some minor dremel work. So, new PSU, then new GTX 780. Good Luck !

(If I mods the chassis a bit maybe it will fir, the problem is the HDD cage in front will be in the way of the PCIe power cables.).

My feeling is that you should check the card you want to buy, check the length of the card.
I think in terms of upgrading, considering the MB only supports 1 16x3.0 PCIE slot, you might look into the most powerful card in one slot that will last another few generations.

Good luck.
