Hi All,

I've recently purchased an Asus RT-AC84U wireless router. Everything was working fine for the first little while, although I was sometimes getting slower than average wireless speeds which I assumed were do to my ISP.

It turns out the actual issue I am having is that my 2.4GHz wireless connection on this router is unstable for some reason. I have WPA2 security on both my 2.4Ghz stream and my 5Ghz stream.

When I connect to my 5GHz wireless speedtest.com will return speeds of 58-60mb/s (the amount my IPS has allotted me. But if I switch over to the 2.4 Ghz connection the speed will drop down to half or less, sometimes rapidly fluctuating between 1mb/s and 20.

The annoying thing about this issue is that sometimes both connections will be completely fine, both putting out a stead reasonable speed, but for some reason this degradation will pop up out of nowhere and destroy my 2.4Ghz connection!

Additional points:
- This issue is not correlated with the number of devices connected to the router or the specific wireless (It's happened when only one device is on in the home and been completely terrible or completely fine)

- My two connections have different names one has ___ 5Ghz beside the name

- Our router is located on the main floor of a semi-detached home, my computer (which has an AC wireless card) can get the 5Ghz connection at full bars constantly and the 2.4 Ghz connection at full bars constantly is the computer I have been speedtesting on

- There are upwards of 10 devices connected to the router on any given day

- Other people have reported a similar issue with this router's 2.4 Ghz connection although many have stated that their connection cuts out - ours does not cut out it just drops to 1mb/s

- I have recently attempted to switch to Merlin's custom firmware for the RT-AC84U and it has slightly improved our situation although the issue persists (just less often)

Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

-Michael

Could you be getting interference from somewhere? I'm guessing you probably checked as you were smart enough to switch out to the merlin firmware but that's really the only other thing I can think of, other than a bad router.
