Upgraded my RAM, computer is now slower.

I upgraded my DDR3 Ram from 2x2gb to 2x4gb (8 total) recently. The computer now takes longer to start and some memory intensive programs will not run.

I know the sticks are fully functional. I also know that the manufacturer, and specs of the 2gb sticks and the 4gb sticks are identical except the memory capacity.

My theory is that the machine did not recognize the 4gb sticks as new and is still running the drivers configured for 2gb. A troubleshooting diagnostic also told me "New hardware changes may not have been detected.", which also leads me to this conclusion.

Am I correct? And if so, which drivers should I reinstall to sort this out. Auto driver-update utilities I've tried are ineffectual so I'm guessing I'll have to sort this out manually. A good list of drivers to reinstall would be appreciated.
Thanks.

What Operating System are you using? If it is a 32-bit OS, the max your system will recognize is 4GB. If it is a 64-bit OS, your system can read 8GB or more (depending on what OS (Windows 7 Home, Ultimate, etc)).

There are no "drivers" for memory.
How much memory does your system monitor say you have? How much counts up during the memory test during the beginning of POST (power on system test)? Download and run memtest to be sure your memory is operating error free, you may have a bad stick.

This machine doesn't show a post count-up when I start it. Windows 7 Control panel > system says it sees all 8 gigs. I'll try memtest and see what it tells me.

Memtest checks out on one pass, do I need to let it run more?
