I am trying to install a TMRM74DAM22GG processor to upgrade my dell 1501 laptop. I have updated to bios 2.6.3, however the computer will only allow the cooling fan to breifly come on and then nothing. Are there any drlvers or cd boot tactics that will let this work. Maybe system settings or options to adjust? I am running win7 pro with 2gb of ram and have checked all current system drivers, seems fine. Your help and direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks- B. Smith

You got the wrong processor, I'm afraid. The Turion uses the S1g2 socket, whereas your laptop only supports S1g1 processors like the Sempron you have now. Plus, the Turion requires 10 more watts of heat dissipation, so it's entirely possible that your Dell realizes this and shuts down to prevent overheating.

If you want to upgrade, you'll have to go with an older S1g1 processor. The best one available for you is the Mobile Sempron 3700+, which is a little bit faster but should run a lot cooler during normal operation and can be had for less than $10 on eBay. There are dual-core CPUs that are socket-compatible but draw more power and will likely overheat.

Myself and many other 1501 users currently have the Turion 64 X2 series installed in their laptops. You can install up to the TL-66 I think, but you'll find best results with TL-56 up to the TL-64 from what I gather.
I currently have the TL-56, 4GB of RAM (up to 8GB with latest BIOS and 64-bit windows) and 64-bit Vista Home Premium. Runs well enough to play games like Mount & Blade on low settings.

Hope this helps yourself or someone else.

Why would you want to take the lower clocked CPU ? Thank you.

Purely down to budget at the time. I got the TL-56 for free. I've since bought a new laptop and didn't see much point in upgrading again just before I replaced the machine . EDIT: I forgot to mention the machine's cooling system isn't really designed for higher clocked CPUs , so it might struggle to cool the laptop and actually end up worse off than a lower rated CPU

Hello,

You need to update the BIOS to the latest version. The update should be available from the Dell website. The latest BIOS version allows up to 8GB of RAM and some slightly better CPUs. This was never made public by Dell. Installing more RAM and a better CPU will allow you to run newer versions of Windows etc.

Hi BSMITH0716,

I have upgraded a Dell Inspiron 1501 several months ago to an AMD Turion TL60, 6GB Ram DDR2 PC2-6400 and a 250GB SSD and all is working perfectly for the past 4 months. No problems at all and no overheating. In fact the fan hardly ever turns on. This is machine is super fast for normal activity but I know nothing about gaming.

I have not tried 8GB of Ram but I believe it will work. Also anything up to TL68 should also work as mentioned earlier. Also it's always important to upgrade to the latest BIOS.

I have also put the same components into a Dell Inspiron 6400 and an Acer Extensa 5220 with the exception of the processor. I used an Intel T9300 for these two machines. The same very good results and now I'm doing the same with a Dell Latitude D830.
