I'm going to be buying a GTX 780 soon and was wondering about running different games on resoulutions 1080p+. However the monitor I currently own says 1080p on the box what would happen if I ran the card at higher settings? And try to avoid suggestions on different cards and the like I really only want to know the answer to my question :)  thanks everyone for your time!

It's not the card that determines your settings, your monitors max res, is 1080p so you can't go higher than that

If the monitor only supports up to 1080p, you cannot run higher resolutions. LCD/LED/Plasma monitors all have a physical number of actual pixels on the screen, and that is the native/max supported resolution, so your monitor likely has 1920x1080 as its max resolution, and nothing can force it higher.

A monitor that you buy has a fixed array of pixels going horizontally and vertically, so a monitor with 1920 x 1080 resolution cannot exceed that resolution. If you want to upgrade to a 2560 x 1440 resolution, the monitor must have that resolution, such as this one here. http://www.ebay.com/itm/QNIX-QX2710-LED-Evolution-II-Mu...
