How to delete a empty storage device?

The other day i was just moving some files when i noticed a new drive pop up called RECOVERY(Z), I have no idea where it came from but I cant delete it it has no storage (0 bytes) and I get an error when I try to format it (windows was unable to format) I have hide empty drives checked, I have three drives C E D and a thumb drive F, I first thought is was a partition of one but after checking none of them are partitioned or fragmented, is there a way to just delete it as I'm starting to think I suffer from mild OCD as I have spent hours trying to hide or delete it. Thanks for any help.

First thing is to see where it's coming from. What version of Windoze do you have? Can you open Disk Management and see where it is?

I suspect that this is where the manufacturer put the recovery data (duh) so that the machine could be reset to factory default, and that somehow it got mapped to a drive letter. I think that you can just unmap.

I will. In general, please open a new thread for a new question.

Assuming Windows 7, simply because I have it in front of me
1) Open the Control Panel
2) Open Administrative Tools
3) Open Computer Management
4) In the left panel, under Storage, select Disk Management. Sorry, I can't post pics from where I am now.
5) In the picture section, right-click on the drive that you wish to remove
6) In the pop-up menu, pick Change Drive Letter and Paths.
7) Click on Remove

All this does is removes the drive letter. The partition is still there, whatever was on it is still there unless you use the space again or wipe the drive, but it won't show up as a drive letter.
