Looking for portable external hard drive

Hey everyone. I am a first time portable external hard drive buyer, and I am not sure about reliable brands and/or quality portable hard drives out now. I have been looking around and found the Seagate Backup Plus Slim and the WD My Passport Ultra to be pretty good. My question is if I should go with one of the two I just mentioned or go with something else. Like most people, I am looking for great quality at a reasonable price, so any and all feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

This is one area where you'll get conflicting advice based on a user's own experience of the two brands, but I'd choose WD over Seagate without hesitation.

Why? Because last year I had no less than three Seagate externals fail on me within six months (plus several problems with them all even when they were working), whereas the three WD externals I bought as replacements are still going strong and have been totally reliable and problem-free.

So based on my experience, the choice is a no-brainer. Now if some other members don't contradict my choice I'll be very surprised. But in truth none of us are wrong, it's based on what we've experienced. Overall though, I think it's very likely that WD comes out on top as more trusted than...

There's a third contender, Hitachi. I have had a desktop external Hitachi for for over four years. It sits there doing it's stuff with no drama, utterly reliable.

I appreciate the feedback Phillip! I'll look Into WD external hard drives and try them out. Since I'm a first time buyer and like you said, I'll have to try the products out and see for myself!
