I solved the problem ..all i had to do was go to device manager -> under storage controllers selected the "USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device" which comes up when i connect the drive -> right click and select update driver software ->browse my computer option -> let me pick ... option -> in the listed drivers i selected mass storage device and clicked OK. Everything works fine now ..

What happens when you plug it into any OTHER USB port? Can you detect it then? If not, then the ext drive is DOA most likely. The next test would be to plug it into another different PC / Mac and see if IT can see the drive contents. If not then you confirmed either the USB 3.0 cord is dead or the drive is.

All the ports are USB 3.0 and the drive was not detected with them too .The other ports are working (i use them for pen-drives ,mouse etc) ...the external drive works on other PC ....neither the drive nor the cord is dead. The external drive is ok now, it started working again when i updated the driver as mentioned earlier.
