That's a great build

It'll smash anything you throw at it.
However, you don't need an i7 for games (no performance increase).

I'd say only the high end 780 ti models get over 80fps, even the best 780 ti models only get 87, so ultra is no problem, but id say 60-75fps ultra

This is arguably the best 290x there is and it gets 61 min and 71 max fps on 1080p ultra

The r9 290x is a great card for battlefield 4, you should get about 60 - 70 fps on ultra. But there is one thing, the CPU and MOBO are outdated. Ditch the z87 board and go for the newer z97 ones and a devil's canyon CPU.

New CPU: i7 4790K
Very good CPU with a standard clock of 4GHz. Should be fine for schoolwork and battlefield 4.

If you can't afford a 780 ti a sapphire tri x 290x would be for you, it can get at least 61fps on ultra

The higher clock speed is worth it, and the i5 only has 3.5GHz. Since he probably won't be overclocking, this is a good choice that fits his budget.

The extra $49 is worth it for him, the i7 has a higher clock rate and has turbo boost up to 4.5 GHz. Gaming will be really smooth on this chip, even if he doesn't overclock. Overclocking has quite a big learning curve, and the 4.0 stock clock will give him great fps, as Bf4 Is a CPU intensive game.

Here's what I'd go with.
CPU will perform just as well, and OC better. Much better GPU and RAM, too. Motherboard would colour match the case, better PSU.
