SSD speed decreases while copying files ...

Hello everyone,

I 'd like some help regarding an issue i have with my ssd...
It is a recently bought Samsung 840 EVO 250GB ( Win 7 x64 installed there)..So. let's say i have some movie files (e.g. 5GB) on the ssd and i want to copy-paste them in another directory ON THE SAME drive..
The problem is,as the title says, that every time i do that, the transferring speed starts at approx. 350 MB/s but then rapidly drops down to let's say 120MB/s ( i see this from the windows copying window that pops-up..)..
So why is that? Is it normal? i thought that as long as no other mechanical drive is involved, the transfer speed of the SSD should stay high as expected.. ( The drive is connected on SATA3 not SATA2, so that's not the case..)

Thanks in advance,
Stathis

Those are excellent figures, that EVO is performing very well.

You're all good.

First of all, you're using I/O's on the SSD for both read and write which will slow the drive down, secondly a 5GB file will fill the write buffer really fast and then you'll see the drive settle on its constant, and for that operation, maximum speed. If you had two Samsung EVO's and you copied from one to the other drive, the speed would be higher.

Thanx for the fast reply.. So, this is normal and every SSD handles file transferring like this i suppose..? It's just that write speeds such as 100-120 MB/s seemed kind of low for a SSD.. Well, then i guess having just one ssd doesn't improve things very much over a HDD when it's about data transfer speeds, right? i didn't know that..

Well, if it was reading or writing only, then the speed would be double, if not more. But yea, transferring files to itself is rather demanding, and I doubt that any mechanical HDD would do any better, probably around 40-60MB/s, if that.

I see... well, i know that the Evo is a great drive and i was not so pleased seeing these speed rates.. and i thought the reason could be something i may have done wrong while ''playing'' with the Samsung Magician software.. So, i hope you 're right then and that my issue isn't actually an issue i guess..

Seq. read 550 MB/s ans Seq. write 530 MB/s (RAPID not enabled).. and i've done the test more than once these days..
but these rates are even better than the advertized ones.. so what's the deal?
i also did crystaldiskmark test and the results : (5 circles - 500MB settings)
seq read 501 - seq write 489
512k read 439 - 512k write 452
4k read 39 - 4k write 84
4kqd32 read 403 - 4kqd32 write 348

are these ok or is there something wrong?

Huh uh... There is absolutely NO way that can be normal.

I have exactly the same SSD drive and when I copy a 10 Gig file to itself, the speed starts off at about 350 m/sec for about 1/3 of the transfer and then dips down a few times as low as 60 m/sec for a few seconds, but mostly fluccuates around 200 m/sec and then speeds up toward the end back up to around 300 m/sec. so, what the guy is telling you here is complete Bull$hit.

NOW... the trouble I have is copying or transferring to my internal Caviar Black drive through a SATA 3 connection (6 Gigs/sec) A 10 Gig file will start from either drive to the other at about 300 - 400 m/sec as you would expect. Then, after about 5 seconds the rest of the transfer slows down to about 80 m/sec. and stays there until finished WHY...??? It makes NO bloody sense at all. So, I have some odd thing where when I transfer to or from any OTHER drive, my speeds are super slow.

The ONLY transfer speeds that make ANY sense at all on my setup, is between the internal HDD or SSD to an external USB 3 HDD. Then, they seem always to be steady and consistent at about 100 - 120 m/sec, which is about right. But, here we have this nice SUPPOSEDLY kick@ss SSD drive and an internal SATA 3 connection to my HDD and I'm only getting 80 m/sec...???!!!

If you look at my setup I have two Samsung SSD's in r0, when I move files, sometimes as large as 50 gigabyte, burst is around 400-500 MB/s, my maximum internal write speed hovers around 240-350 MB/s.

Now I also have an 850 Pro 512 GB and guess what, transferring from my r0 to the 850 Pro is much faster, bursting at 800Mb/s and continuous write speed of 480-500 mb/s.

Do explain how to make my read and write buffers infinite. The Samsung drives of 512 Gigs come with a 512 MB read and write cache(buffer), if RAPID is enabled you get an additional (up to) 2 gigabyte taken from your RAM.

Im running into kinda the same issue, i have 2 ocz. 60gb agility 3s, raided togeather. and copying a 5gb file from a synology ds2015 thu a ubiquity egdeswtch with spf+ and a spf+ (10gb nic card installed in my pc), it starts out at apx 400MB/s then 3/4 of the file it dropes down to 100MB/s. Is that normally? When i copy files to synology i get a constant 300MB/s. Synology had 8x wd 6tb reds in it. Raid 6. And when it dropes to 100MB/s drive is at 100% usage
