I have a 1TB WD MyPassport external USB 3.0 hard drive. When I decided to reinstall Windows, just for that fresh, clean feeling, I originally copied my NTFS partitions over to a 1TB WD Black I had in my system (I fully copied the partitions using GParted on a live Ubuntu USB boot, I didn't just copy the files over). When I wanted to use that disk, I moved those partitions again over to my external drive. This worked fine.
Then came the day when I was using Win32 Disk Imager to write an image file to an SD card. What I didn't realize is that it would detect my external hard drive (something I had never plugged in before while using Win32 Disk Imager) and write to it instead of defaulting to my SD card.
During that Windows session, I was still able to read and copy files over fine from that drive, which I do regularly to retrieve old stuff as I need it. However, subsequent Windows boots would not mount the drive.
GParted could not detect the partitions, showing a corrupt partition table. I used the gpart package with GParted to infer file systems, and it correctly found my NTFS partitions. However, it would not mount them for data recovery, displaying a generic error message when I attempted to do so.
Any suggestions on where to go from here? If I have to I'll look at a massive hex table, but I was wondering if anybody thought I might have some luck with any other software?
