What OS should I pick for a new gaming PC?

I don't know what OS to get for a new gaming PC I want to build soon but I'm stuck on the OS..

I wouldn't want to go Linux because Linux, albeit an increasing library of games, will not cut it since I want to play old games, and games like Battlefield, frankly, is not on Linux
.
Secondly, Windows 8 sucks. I think we can all agree on this.
However, I've heard Windows 8 offers some performance improvements and Microsoft are going to make DirectX 12 exclusive to Windows 8!

Windows 7 tops out as king, HOWEVER, since I am planning on getting a DirectX 12 capable GPU, would it make sense to get Windows 8 and just hang in there?

Thank you in advance.

Go with Windows 8. Im one of the only people who like it, but everyone likes it cause of the performance boost. Also is you want to get the windows start menu, you can go on startisback.com and buy the software for really cheap.

Okay then, that's settled Windows 8 it is! Still up for more responses, but if I do get Windows 8, I'll install Classic Shell or Start8, IF, I don't like it. I think the performance boosts might be worthwhile..

Actually, no, we don't all agree Windows 8 sucks.

Upgrade to 8.1, change the boot to go directly to Desktop, oft used applications pinned to the autohide taskbar or the desktop.....I see little visual difference from Win 7, with all the underlying benefits of 8.

I think I've had a change of heart about Windows 8, but it gets a LOT of flak on the internet!
Meh, I'll get the hang of it, anyway..
