Can I put my second MSI R9 290X card in the PCI x4 slot to give the first card some room for cooling? The card is getting to hot and Throttling. I have the Maximus V Formula Motherboard so I have a third PCI slot. Will this greatly reduce performance? Right now I am losing performance because the top card is throttling because its getting to hot. any help would be appreciated.

x16 mode and x8 mode dont impact performance, but running a card, especially one that powerful in x4 mode will case performance loss.
I wouldnt recommend it. Your best option is to try and improve airflow.

I definitely wouldn't recommend it, as you will loose a ton of bandwidth. 8X is fine for virtually any card (excluding cards like the r9 295x2). For something as powerful as a 290x, you will not want to chuck it in the 4x slot because the card needs more bandwidth than that to run at full speed. If temps are an issue you could always underclock your cards by ~50MHZ, that would beat it running in a 4X anyday.
Hope I could help.

Why not get a AIO water cooler and a Kraken G10 bracket. With a Corsair H90 and the Kraken G10 my 290x runs at 52-3 degrees under load and it is very quiet.
