I have been considering getting a new graphics card, an AMD Radeon HD 7990 (http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/desktop/7000...), but I am unsure whether it will fit in my motherboard as I am not good with understanding connections, a Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=...)
Could someone please tell me if it will fit? Thanks

More about : graphics card compatibility

The motherboard you listed has a PCI x16 3.0 and the GPU yep needs that to fit. So in conclusion it will fit without a problem. ;)

Is that all it will need? I thought there were things related to the power supply too

yes it will fit
you can simply check "BUS INTERFACE" in the VGA and "Expansion Slots" in the MoBo
both running at PCI Ex 3.0 (x16)

Yes definitely. Please specify all your specs. :)

Intel i5
Nvidia GTX 660
Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 Motherboard
8GB RAM
Cooler Master RS-500-PCAP-I3 power supply (I know I'll probably need to upgrade it)

I think that's it

What model i5?
So you will be switching the GPU right?

It is an i5 4570 3.2GHz
Yes and probably the power supply as it needs more power

I believe a 600W would be more than enough.

So I just need to get a better power supply and then it'd be fine?

Yes I checked that the 7790 uses about 200-250W so you should be fine with a 600W.

Careful, he's not talking about a 7790, but a 7990... totally different thing! 375W TDP.

Are you sure you need that much GPU horsepower? It's overkill for gaming at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. If you have a 120/144Hz monitor, or high res, it might be worth it.

That 7990 is actually a dual GPU card, which means it's actually two graphics cards on the same PCB. You rely on drivers to get the performance benefits and it's never actually double the performance of a single card. You might be better with an r9 290, which is a little slower than the 7990 when it's performing optimally, but you won't have the driver issues you will with a dual GPU card.

One more thought, you have a mATX motherboard? How good is the airflow in your case? That 7990 dumps loads of heat into your case and you might find it turning into an oven if your case isn't up for it.

Finally, you'd want a good quality 650W PSU IMHO as a minimum for a 7990.

I'd even go for 750W just for a piece of mind and overhead. But a good quality 650W would do fine.

I'm also worried if he's trying to mash it into a mATX case, soon to be Hotdog Machine. D:

I was considering an R9 290X but decided against it. If there is too much heat in the case I'll just remove the case's side panel which I have had to do before. I've been trying to find a suitable power supply but can't seem to, any ideas?

Check the newegg specials, assuming you're buying from the US.
There's a 750W EVGA Bronze for $80, or a good quality Corsair HX gold 750W for $130, or pay an extra $10 and you get a top of the line Corsair ax760. Though the corsairs are more expensive, both are good quality units on decent specials.

On what basis are you choosing a 7990 over a 290 or 290X? It's your money, spend it where you want, but IMHO the 290 would be a much better buy, unless you absolutely need top performance and the games you want to play scale well with crossfire.
