Hi All,

I've been quoted a price on a new system (specs below) and I was hoping somebody could let me know whether the build is sensible or not? The GPU is being swopped out from my old system, so if the price looks cheap that's why :)

Case: COOLERMASTER ELITE 311 BLUE CASE
Processor (CPU): Intel i7-4790k
Motherboard: ASUS® Z97-A
Memory (RAM): 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz
Graphics Card: Sapphire HD 7850 OC 1Gb
SSD: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
PSU: CORSAIR VS-550
Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO
OS: Win 7 64bit

I'm not intending to OC the system straight away, but I want to retain the option. I'm going to be splitting the system between gaming and music production. I kinda want the system to give me at least three years, preferably five, of life before I start getting twitchy about upgrading the CPU/MoBo again. My main concerns are, is the system overkill for my needs (especially considering I'm not upgrading my GPU) and should I wait another seven months for prices to drop on the CPU / MoBo or new technology to become available (isn't the new Intel architecture on the way)?

I also know the PSU sucks. It's the only one available from the site though, so my longer term aim is to swop it out for something better in about twelve months time.

I'm being quoted £700, inc VAT, for the above (the price doesn't include the OS or GPU)

Thanks for reading.

way better build for the price.

Thanks for the suggestion ModernWarfare :) I'm quite keen to stick with Intel, and while the Asus mobo is a little overkill for my current needs, I'm figuring it's pretty future-proof. I'm going with your PSU and RAM suggestions though...

So, I've had a bit more of a shop around and now, instead, I'm looking at this,

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£149.14)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (£22.63)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A (£103.99)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 CL9 Memory (£61.64)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£83.99)
Case Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case (£66.80)
Power Supply: XFX 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (£59.99)
Total: £548.18

Still intending on keeping the OC Sapphire HD7850 1Gb, maybe with an aim to get something better early next year. Also intending on swopping out the CD drive from my current box and a 500Gb HDD from it as well, but thinking of getting a 1Tb Seagate or WD HDD at a later date.

Also intending on adding a PCIe firewire card so I can hook my Phonic mixer up.

Really appreciate any feedback on the above. Thank you!
