Excessive Unexplained Memory Usage

I'm running vista 32-bit on an HP media centre desktop pc I got back in 2007. Windows vista is garbage and I've been reformatting this computer basically every 6 months since I got it, due to various issues.

Anyway, the most recent issue I've been having now is excessive memory usage when no programs in the task manager are responsible.

My computer sits at idle from startup at say 20-30% total memory. At this moment and once before (both during this week, issue first occured). Its running at about 60% at idle from startup.

When you add a browser in there (Firefox), normally id get 70% and now I'm hitting 95%. The last time this occured I sat and watched the task manager and after 10 minutes the memory usage just dropped down 20-30% back to normal.

There are NO programs in task manager showing that are responsible for this much usage.

Just wondering what this might be?

Im assuming its either malware or hardware issues, but am not sure.

its an hp pavillion media centre tv desktop pc m8125x if memory serves me correctly.

2gb of ram. Been having issues with this thing forever. Last two times it was black screens of death, to what I assume was from memory issues. The prior wouldnt even allow windows to be able to be booted from a disc. I eventually got it working after fiddling with the BIOS and noticed my comp was set to PCI rather than PCI-E. Did that and boom, disc was able to load without black screen of death for once....reinstalled windows and that was 6 months ago.

Besides on occasion my browser having a solid black bar encompassing 33% of the screen from high memory usage (from excessive Firefox tabs)....this is the first real odd issue of memory leaking for no seeable reason.

2GB is enough to run and that's about it, w/ 32bit Win 4 GB is the max it will play with or better yet, get 8GB and move to Win7 64 - you already know you don't like Vista.....I've got some clients still running Vista with no problems (even 32bit) but they have the DRAM maxed out

Both of you are wrong. I've been running this comp on 2gb for the past 7 years. Like I said up until last week my comp was "just running" at 20-30% memory. Now its "just running" at 60-70%. Therefore it is not a capacity concern but a problem with malware/hardware/etc.
