new w8 cd will not boot in xp pc

Hi .... my older upgraded desktop (dual celeron with 2gigram) is running xp ... cause of virus problems I purchased w8.1 on cd .... this 32 bit cd does not boot in the cd drive ... it always attempts to boot, but just makes a few noises & quits trying after a couple minutes ... any other cd I install in the cd drive works fine ... the w8 assistant thing says all is good to go for w8 ... any suggestions ... thanx ... brian

I think you are making it harder than it is. The CD rom on your computer reads CDs. If that CD rom is not also a DVD rom, It will not read DVDs. And I am almost 100% sure that windows 8 is on a DVD not a CD. All newer computers have CD/DVD roms in them. If your computer is older it MAY only be a CD rom. In which case it will not read a DVD. DVDs and CDs look the same but it should say somewhere whether it is a cd or dvd.

Hwy Hans ... thanks ... nothing is ever simple ... guess I'd best get my grandson to read ur reply & figure this out ... obviously I'm way lost ... I don't think I own a dvd player ... maybe the wei ...b
