Hi everyone, I need some advice on building a new gaming rig. I'm looking for components that are capable of running any game at at least 60 fps in 1080p, preferably 1440p.
Preferences :
120fps
2560x1440

I don't want the system to cost ridiculous money but I'd like some idea's on a good 1440p monitor, what Intel cpu would be appropriate from the i5-i7 range, a large case with plenty of space, maybe a ~100GB SSD and a good Mobo for Overclocking. I might also need a larger HDD.

Current Rig :
AMD Phenom ii X4 965 (OC to 3.8 GHz)
ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX Mobo
Fractal Design Core 1000 Series Micro ATX Case
Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600 MHz
HD7870 XT GPU
I think ~700W PSU
7200RPM HDD 500GB

As you can see, my current rig isn't bad, I built it on a tight budget but it struggles in more cpu intensive games/scenarios (e.g. GTA IV, GW2, BF4, Modded Skyrim)
In most games I hover around at least 40fps+ on ultra / high but I'd like a smoother more graphically intense experience.
I would like this to be more of a system rebuild focused for an intel system.
I will likely want to hold onto my current GPU, RAM and PSU for now unless you feel I should replace it.
In this system I am perfectly fine with a good OCable cpu, and if need be include an aftermarket cooler.
I need suggestions since all I mostly know about is AMD since they were cheaper than intel whilst I was building my previous system.

Thanks for the suggestions guys :)

You don't really need extra RAM now, 8GB is good for gaming.
Here's an extreme build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£163.14 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£22.49 @ Ebuyer)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£100.52 @ Ebuyer)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£54.35 @ CCL Computers)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£49.98 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB Tri-X Video Card (£399.59 @ Overclockers.co.uk)...
Firstly, you can't get 100+ FPS on 1440p with ANY GPU.

Secondly, 4GB isn't enough, you'd need atleast 8GB, and so if your config is 2X2GB sticks, then we'll have to arrange the exact same 2X2GB or 2X4GB sticks for it to work w/o issues.

Thirdly, your current GPU won't provide you what you need, not even close. You'd need atleast a 780 or R9 290, preferably a R9 290X or GTX 780 Ti to reach the 80 FPS mark on Ultra on 2k.

You need to specify your PSU model. It has to be of a good enough quality to take a high end PC's load.

Lastly, please give a rough estimate of your budget, it'll help us alot.

oh yea sorry thats 2x4GB, and the PSU is Corsair, I made sure to get a good brand when I bought it, thanks again ;P

I wouldn't mind at least 60+fps at 1080p, but preferably 60+fps at 1440p

(My last PSU exploded... I learnt that lesson the hard way T_T)

The i5 OCs to 4.5GHz stable easily. The best gamer's CPU.
That MoBo can do wonders with OCing, highly recommended.
R9 290X 4GB Tri X, OMG this's the boss in gaming, expect 60+ FPS in any game on ultra on 1440p, 80+ FPS on FHD!
120GB SSD + 2TB HDD, enough space.
Win 8.1.

I guess you'll be good to go with your current PSU and RAM along with this build.
60+ FPS on any game on ultra on 1440p as you wished ;)

Thanks Meteors, I'll definitely get around to checking each component out tomorrow... I'm off to a party in like 3 mins, at first glance this looks exactly like what I want. I'll post back tomorrow ;P

If anyone else has any builds, please continue to post them ;)
Also I need a monitor... xD though my budget is flexible

Okay I went through the list and it seems good thanks for the help. (Party was delayed...)
Although I'm concerned about the power usage for my PSU, would you be able to give an estimated power usage if I overclocked both the cpu and gpu (including the other components too)

Also do you have any idea's for a good 1080/1440p monitor 60/120Hz?
