Hi everyone,i was able to get yesterday a HD 4870 512MB DDR5 graphic card for a old system that i have, the specs of that system are:

CPU - Pentium D e2160
Ram - 3Gb DDR2
Motherboard - asrock 4core-dual sata
Storage - seagate 160gb sata
PSU - Halfmman 500W (+12v1 - 15A , +12v2 - 16A)

The problem is that the graphic card doesnt work,i plug the system the graphic card starts but after 10s disconnects while the rest(cpu+fans) keep going. Is this because the PSU doesnt have enough power for the graphic card?If so,if i get a Corsair vs450,would that be enough to handle this gpu?

Thanks in advance for the help :)

A 500w PSU is sufficient for a single 4870, but not if it has less than 18 amps on the 12v rail.
You need a PSU with at least 18 amps on the 12v rail, and a good quality one at that, which means Seasonic, Corsair or Antec.

You need to be very careful using an inadequate PSU with your shiny new graphics card. If the PSU buckles under the strain or just plain kills itself, it can kill the graphics card too.

So you can see why it's false economy buying a cheap PSU or trying to soldier on with your existing one after upgrading the GPU.

I doubt that the Halfmman 500W can even supply any more than 360 Watts maximum. The OEM is most likely L&C Technology INC (aka Deer, Solytech, etc.). Horrible stuff.

The Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, itself, can draw up to 15.5 Amps from the +12V rail.

The Corsair VS450, if it's the recent model 75-001835 / CP-9020096, is theoretically sufficient to do the job based on your specific system configuration.

Thanks for all the answers so far ,another think i noticed when i try to use the hd 4870 with the halfmman psu is that in the gpu a red light flicks just before it shutsdown, does that mean that it doesnt have enough power to start?

It depends on the brand of Radeon HD 4870 graphics card. The indicator LEDs indicate what the problem is depending upon which 4 LEDs are lit.

Just get a better psu.I googled that psu too and afaik it even doesn't have the right connectors, you must be working via molex->pcie adapters.
Get one with the proper connectors at least 2x6pin pcie connectors.Even that vs 450watt should work in that regard if that's what you can get.
If you still have problems after that you could have bought a bad card, that's the risk in second hand.If you want to be certain it isn't the gpu do you have to test it in a different system with a good psu.
