hi guys,

i've got an old computer and i want to make a NAS.
the NAS should have 2 HDD (WD reds) in RAID 1
i also want it to torrent overnight and maybe run a gameserver like gmod or space engeniers.
Also if i could stream movie's to my TV (via ethernet LAN).
I want the NAS to accessible from the outside and maybe via an app on a smartphone (android).

Can i do this all in windows server 2008 (R2) ?
my friend told me i should use freeNAS in an virtual machine on the pc but the NAS should really be reliable as all important data and backups will be stored on there.

the computer:

cpu: i3-530
RAM: 6gb kingston
motherboard: unsure, it's an low end MSI with RAID 0,1 and 5 support
psu: 300W
storage: 2x Western digital reds
i have an radeon hd 5450 laying around but i don't think i need it for this

thanks in advance guys

I don't know about a tutorial. What you need can be broken down (and searched for in the context of "Windows server 2008" into following categories:
- remote access / VPN into the server. This will give you the same access to the server as if you were connected locally;
- torrents: I hope there are lot more tutorials on that
- DLNA (streaming movies): There are lot of apps for that; I am using TVersity with great success

I am recommending hardware RAID controller so that your Windwos box does not have to do that in software, and will be easier to setup / administrate.

thanks for the response,

Do you know a tutorial to setup a NAS in windows 2008 server because I've tried searching some but with not much success.

Do i need a RAID card? the RAID cards i find are €50+ and my plan was to build it as cheap as possible. speed isn't a priority but reliability is. And do i need RAID card to put in more drive's in the array without having to re install the OS?

RAID1 by itself is NOT a backup. You need at least a second independent device to backup data to.
There is no reason whatsoever to use RAID1 unless you already have a second drive or NAS for backup.

Yes, but drive failure is not the majority cause of data loss.

A RAID1 configuration is far more likely to result in data loss than 2 independent drives.
