I'm trying to install Ubuntu (desktop) onto a PC. I downloaded the file, burned it onto a DVD, put it into the PC's CD drive, and changed boot priority to the CD drive. But when the computer starts up, it ends up skipping over the CD drive and starting up Windows from the hard drive instead. Disabling the hard drive as a boot device just results in it saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER."

Apparently, the PC doesn't recognize the Ubuntu file on the disk. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this sort of thing. What am I doing wrong?

How did you burn the image to the DVD? You need to use an ISO image burning program, such as ImgBurn, rather than just transferring the file to a DVD. After you have burned the DVD, if you inspect it in Windows Explorer you should see a whole load of files and directories rather than just a single .iso file.

That was probably the problem. I did what you said using FreeISOBurner. But now when I start up the computer, all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. Normally this appears just before Windows boots up, but the curser just stays there. Does anyone know why this is?

I suspect EFI issue if this is a newer Windows computer. Take a look at your BIOS settings and this documentation. You probably need to reinstall in EFI mode or do boot repair.
