I have a new LED monitor for my Gateway computer and I notice that the contrast is uneven from top to bottom. When the monitor is tilted, if the bottom is full color the top is very dark, and when the top is full color the bottom looks grayish instead of black and the colors look faded or washed out. Is this a problem unique to my monitor (in which case I will return it) or characteristic of the type of monitor. It replaced an old CRT monitor so I have no basis of comparison on the newer technology.

Sounds like you have a defective back light. I'd definitely return it. But keep in mind that some inexpensive LCD monitors have a very poor FOV. You have to be sitting directly in front of them to not loose some clarity. But that does not sound like your problem. The top/bottom should be the same at any angle.
