There is a connector on my motherboard that is labeled in the manual as PCIe-PWR1. When I built my computer about a month ago I didn't plug anything into it because I remember hearing that you only need to use it if you need a lot of power in your PCIe lanes. I have been using the computer with an i5 4690k and GTX 780 for a month and haven't had any problems but should I plug it in to even out the power?

Your motherboard manual page 25 says:

"Please connect a 4 pin molex
power cable to this connector
when more than three graphics
cards are installed."

So no need to connect it in your case.
