Can't install my new 4TB HDD on my W7-64 computer?

"Have you tried running windows update" - It says that I am up to date.

"searching for drivers in device manager" - I tried to update the driver and had it search the Windows directory (WD says that the drivers should already be there) and I get, "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. - Disk drive - Access is denied. - If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for the driver software." But again, WD says that there is no driver for this drive, it just uses the Windows driver. After the driver search, (in Device Manager) the HDD is now listed under "Other devices"

"formatting the drive" - I don't know how to format it without a drive letter. It doesn't show up in Disk Management and when I run "fsutil fsinfo drives" from cmd, it is not there.

Does this help? Any other suggestions?

OK,

I tried swapping the SATA cables for both HDDs, blew them out with some compressed air, and reseated them. When I reboot and go to Disk Management, the HDD is now there and also seems be working in Device Manager. (Progress) I go to Disk Management and initilize it, it asks be to format and it does a quick format. The line in Disk Management turns from black to blue. But...

It still doesn't have a drive letter associated with it and doesn't show up on the list of drives up above. (I was prompted earlier and called it E. I try to rescan disks and refresh but get nothing. If I try to format the disk, I get an error message, "An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for the more information on the error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer." Restart fixes nothing.



Another thing: There is a problem with drivers loading at startup. The WD is the new HDD that I'm trying to install and the ST is the old HDD that has Windows on it.

Now, there have been some problems with drivers recenlty. Usually it has just been "USB Multimedia Keyboard", "Ep1", "Ep2", and "USB Composite Device". Everything has worked fine and I've had bigger fish to fry so I've kind of ignored it - I just assumed that it was because I'm using such an old keyboard and would upgrade later. But now the HDDs are on the list.



Additionally, there is a console window that pops up at startup. It appears very quickly, but I think it says, "ERROR: Invalid argument/option - 'C:\Users\Rox and Kev\AppData\Roaming\Search Protection\SearchProtection.exe'.
Type "TASKLIST /?" for usage."

I could also mention that when I came home a few months ago after having been overseas for several months, it was having a problem with Windows Updater. It failed to load updates for a few months. I thought that I fixed it by deleting back before the first problem update and then it seemed to load the rest fine. I just thought I should mention it.

As near as I can tell, yes, this is supposed to be able to handle large HDDs.

Actually, I was messing around with it last night and decided to switch the SATA back the way they were. The WD HDD disappeared again. So then I tried switching them to different inputs on the MB and now the new HDD works correctly. I guess it was a bad input on the MB. So, actually getdamafiaonyou had the best answer, but somehow I accidentally chose YOGI and I don't know how to change it.

I still have the driver issue, but I'll pursue that in a different thread.
